The New Science of Learning: Building Capacity, Building Fluency, Building Proficient Readers through Research

The latest neuroscience research on how combining teachers’ skill and technology can change brains to enable all children to learn faster and more easily.  Particular attention will be paid to developing reading fluency and reading capacity through application of this research and innovative technology developments.

In this session, you will:

1.  Learn the functions of the brain essential for reading and learning.

2.  Learn the differences between the brains of typical readers and those with reading difficulties.

3.  Learn the best practices for making changes in the brain that translate to improved reading and academic results.

4.  Learn how language skills directly correlate to reading achievement (i.e., the language to literacy continuum).

5.  Learn the compelling research on the impact that 10+ minutes a day of reading can have on student achievement.

Dr. Martha Burns, Adjunct Associate Professor, Northwestern University

Part II:  Changing Lives through Application of Research and Innovative Technologies

Demonstration of innovative technologies that utilize the neuroscience research as well as reading research in areas of fluency and comprehension will be done during this portion of the session.

In this session, you will:

1.  Learn the best practices for developing reading fluency and how voice- recognition technology can be an effective tool for development.

2.  Learn how fluency drives reading comprehension and vocabulary.
